After the French crossed the Vistula, Russia felt threatened along its border and faced the enemy with its army near Preuss - Eylau, where on February 8, 1807 a bloody battle took place with heavy losses on both sides. Eventually the Russians withdrew losing 20 generals, 900 officers, more than 30,000 dead and wounded men; French losses amounted to 10,000 men.
